Andor DU885 vs DU897

cail@rocketmail
Dear MM users,

I am wondering if anyone has experience with Andor EMCCD DU885 and/or DU897.

How is their performance with MM?
How s/n of DU885 2x2 binning comparing DU897?

Any comment will be extremely appreciated.

Thanks,
Liang

Hi Liang,

I can only comment about the DU897 since I do not have direct experience with the DU885.  The DU897 works very well with Micro-Manager.  The only feature that currently does not work is cropped mode (I hope that Andor will have a look a this soon).  The DU885 uses a front-illuminated chip and therefore has a significantly lower QE than the DU885.

The choice between these two camera really depends on what you intend to do with them.  For single molecule imaging, I would certainly go with the DU897.  Even for imaging cells using spinning disk confocal, we are very happy with cameras that use the same chip as the DU897.  If you want a wider field of view combined with fast imaging and low noise you may want to consider the scientific CMOS cameras that are now offered by several companies (warning: these cameras are very new and flawless integration in a microscope system - including Micro-Manager support - can not be guaranteed).

Hope this helps!

Best,

Nico

Thorn, Kurt
I've used the DU885 and can confirm it works fine with Micro-Manager.  But I would second Nico's comments about the lower QE of the DU885.
