µManager 2.0 Beta Release

Chris Weisiger
We're pleased to announce that µManager 2.0 is now in the beta phase. Its features and API are significantly improved from when it first entered alpha. Much thanks to our users who downloaded the alpha builds and gave us their feedback! As for the rest of you, we hope that the beta builds will attract your attention. µManager cannot improve without the feedback of its users!

You can download the latest beta release here:
If you haven't heard about µManager 2.0, it is a major reworking of the µManager user interface and API. A few of the new features include:

 * A completely overhauled image display window with convenient access to important controls
 * Hovering "Inspector" windows for histograms, side-by-side metadata comparisons, overlays, etc.
 * The ability to synchronize display settings (e.g. contrast controls) across multiple datasets
 * Multiple displays for the same dataset
 * Individual profiles for each user, for saving window positions, acquisition settings, etc.
 * A greatly improved "day/night" system for use in dark rooms

The API has received many updates; we hope those of you who write your own scripts and plugins will find the new API much more powerful and flexible.

You can read more about µManager 2.0 here:
https://micro-manager.org/wiki/Version_2.0

We hope you'll download the beta, try it out, and let us know what you think. Thank you, and thanks for using µManager!

-Chris Weisiger and Mark Tsuchida, the µManager Team

A bit late but is the source available somewhere? Might be convenient to start developing stuff against it...

Best regards,

Kris

Yes, it is! µManager 2.0 is on GitHub as a branch, named "mm2", of the main µManager repository. Here's a direct link:

https://github.com/micro-manager/micro-manager/tree/mm2

If I may ask, what are you planning to develop against it? We've written some documentation about µManager 2.0 on the wiki, here:

https://micro-manager.org/wiki/Version_2.0

It'd be great if you could share with us any problems you run into, so we can make certain that 2.0 and its documentation are both as good as possible when the launch date comes.

Note that the hardware layer has not changed at all compared to 1.4, so all devices that work in 1.4 will continue to work in 2.0 without any extra effort.

Good luck!

-Chris

Sweet! :)

We run quite a number of 'strange' setups in our lab, ranging from wide-field setups to various light sheets and even a integrated SEM/wide-field setup. In an effort to standardise the user experience for people coming to work here, I am migrating all of these to MM.

For the moment, this involves mostly Device Adapter work and I indeed noticed that device adapters continue to work nicely.

However, because the setups are quite diverse, many might need specialised UI's and scripting of certain operations and I suspect that lots of things changed there from glancing the wiki pages you mentioned. Some of the new stuff seems quite powerful.

In such cases, it is always nice to have the source handy. Wiki pages can only tell you so much :)

I'll definitely be back here with any issues I might encounter!

Awesome! You are of course welcome to contribute any new or updated device adapters back to the main repository so others benefit from your efforts. :)

Well please, if you have any questions that the wiki pages don't answer, let me know! Our hope is that users should be able to answer any reasonable question without having to source-dive.

One thing that hasn't been documented yet, because it's so new, is the "Quick Access Panel", accessible from the Tools menu. This is a customizable window that you can drag and drop different controls into, so you can easily access buttons that e.g. select a specific channel, run a script, or run an acquisition.

Here's a screenshot of an example setup:

And here's the customization UI:

It's not very difficult to add new controls that can be placed into this, so if there's something missing that you'd like to be able to do, let us know!

I just set up µManager 2.0 Beta on on of our Andor Spinning Disk systems. Everything loaded fine until I went to edit or create a channel Group and got this error: org.micromanager.inernal.utils.PropertyTableData.update(PropertyTableDaa.java:235

None of the device properties accessible PropertyBrowser were available in the group configuration window. Please advise.

Could you please send us the CoreLog file from your session? You can find that in the "CoreLogs" directory of your µManager installation. Thanks!

Also, which version of the 2.0 beta did you use? The "beta2" build linked on
https://micro-manager.org/wiki/Version_2.0
is obsolete (dating from late last year); preferably you should be using the latest nightly build, e.g. from this page:
http://valelab.ucsf.edu/~MM/nightlyBuilds/2.0.0-beta/Windows/

Hi Chris:

We need Micro Manager to control the ASI light sheet microscope. We installed micro manager onto a brand new DELL Precision Tower 7810 computer. It has Nvidia Quadro M2000 4GB video card, 128 GB RAM installed. Run by Windows 7 64bit. Windows can recognize the 128 GB RAM. Each time I started micro manager, I always received an error message "failed to initialize circular buffer - memory requirements not adequate". Whatever the size I put under Image J\Edit\Options\Memory & threads, and Micro Manager\Tools\Options\Sequence buffer size, this error message always shows up. I have tried different version of Micro Manager from 1.4 to 2.0 beta, and many 2.0 beta 3 versions but could not correct this problem. Please help! Thank you!

Hi Chris:

I just found out how to solve the problem. To solve this problem I have to set the memory size before setting up the hardware configuration. The problem I have in my previous post was caused because I load the same hardware setting after I reset the memory size.  Thanks.
