Temperature logging in metadata issue with Andor Camera

Marc-Andre
Hi,

I am using the multidimentional acquisition menu with an Andor camera to
record images over about 10 minutes. The imaging runs fine but I suspect
there is something wrong with the temperature written out to the metadata.

The temperature values in the metadata indicate a stable temperature,
however if I take a reading using the device properties (DP) menu, I can see
a clear change in temperature before and after the acquisition. For example,
I see -67C (DP) before launching a 10 min acquisition, -67C for all frames
(tiff stack metadata) and -63C (DP) immediately after the acquisition.

Has anyone else noticed this behavior before? Am I forgetting a setting? Is
there a way to determine if this situation is arises from the driver or from
MicroManager? I can setup a compiling environment to try changes if needed.

Technical info:
Andor iXon Ultra 888 EMCCD Camera
Andor Driver Pack 2 – v2.102.30034.0
MicroManager version 1.4.22 and version 2.0.0-beta2 (got same behavior with
both)

-|EXT|- Temperature logging in metadata issue with Andor Camera

AndorThirdParty
Hello,

I had a look into this and it seems the temperature recorded in the metadata is pulled from the Device Property Browser rather than the camera. Refreshing the property browser will update the recorded temperature.

I had a look into updating the temperature directly from the device adapter between acquisitions. Unfortunately, this had the effect of updating every property in the device property browser, causing the acquisition to stop and start again.

As a work around I added an additional metadata property recording the correct, current temperature as read from the camera. This has to be named differently from the "Andor-CCDTemperature" property to avoid being overwritten by the value in the property browser.

Would including this extra metadata property (I've named it "Andor-CurrentTemperature" at the minute) be an acceptable workaround for you? If so I can check in that change.

Thanks,

Jack Gaston

Hello Jack,

Having an additional field with the current temperature would work very
well. So to use this change I would simply need to either compile it or use
a nightly build (2.0.0-gamma) ?

Thanks!

Marc-André

Hi Marc-Andre,

I've checked in that change, so it will be available in the next nightly build. I would suggest using the 1.4 nightly builds rather than 2.0.0. You can get these here: http://valelab4.ucsf.edu/~MM/nightlyBuilds/1.4/Windows/

The build with this change included should be available tomorrow morning.

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the patch, I tested it this morning and it works as expected,
both with and without the frame transfer mode, which is perfect.

Would it be possible to upgrade this property to fetch the temperature with
two digits precision, instead of integer value? I don't know if every Andor
camera supports this, but I believe the iXon Ultra 888 does and it would be
nice to have access to the improved accuracy.

Thanks,

Marc-André

Re: -|EXT|- Temperature logging in metadata issue with Andor Camera

AndorThirdParty
Hi Marc-André,

I changed the "Andor-CurrentTemperature" metadata property to retrieve the float value directly from the camera and display it to two decimal places, rather than using MicroManager's properties.

If there is a problem retrieving this value an error message should be displayed in the place of the temperature value.

That change should be included in tonight's nightly build.

Thanks,
Jack
