Velleman K8061 Errors 22, 101, 112

Matthew Nicholas-2
Hello All:
I'm trying to install the K8061 on 32 bit Windows 7, following the instructions here
http://valelab.ucsf.edu/~nico/MMwiki/index.php/Velleman_K8061
http://austinblanco.com/blog/?p=209
I know the board itself works from previous testing on another computer with the manufacturer's drivers and demo program. The Win7 installation is a clean one from this morning. I'm using the latest uManager 1.3 nightly build. I installed the K8061 using the driver from the uManager drivers directory, and it seemed to go smoothly (minus the typical message about Windows being unable to verify the driver publisher). After installation, the device type in the device manager appears as "LibUSB-Win32 Devices", and the K8061 appears as "K8061 USB Interface Board" (Driver version is 0.1.12.1).

Using a minimal config file (see below) that just loads the K8061, I get the following repeatable behavior:
1) plug in K8061; "power" LED is solid, "run" LED flashes
2) Load config file below; "run" LED turns solid, "USB" light turns on (solid), and "RX/TX" light turns on (solid)
3) A few seconds later, I get an error message:
Error code: 39, Line 19: Property,Core,Initialize,1, Error code: 22, Velleman K8061-0. Error code 101 (65 hex)
4) Try to load config file again (all LEDs still solid), and I get a slightly different error:
Error code: 39, Line 19: Property,Core,Initialize,1, Error code: 22, Velleman K8061-0. Error code 112 (70 hex)

I assume the error code on line 19 is caused by the error from the K8061, and can thus be ignored.

Any advice anyone can offer would be much appreciated! My config file and CoreLog.txt are below.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

This is caused by an incompatibility between the driver and Windows 7.  Luckily, it turned out to be quite straightforward to build a new driver.  However, it will be a couple of days before this new driver and new USBManager are fully integrated in the build and there is still an issue with unloading the driver, causing Micro-Manager to occasionally crash (you can recover from this by unplugging and reinserting the USB cable to the K8061).  We'll work on these issues in the next couple of days.  In the mean time, you can:

1. Download and install Micro-Manager 1.4
2. Replace the file mmgr_dal_USBManager.dll in Micro-Manager 1.4 with the version from http://valelab.ucsf.edu/~MM/mmgr_dal_USBManager.dll
3. Download the new K8061 driver from http://valelab.ucsf.edu/~MM/K8061Driver.zip.  Replace your current driver with this one.

Let me know if your Velleman board now works with Micro-Manager.

Best,

Nico

Re: Velleman K8061 Errors 22, 101, 112

Matthew Nicholas-2
Hi Nico,

In the mean time, you can:

1. Download and install Micro-Manager 1.4
2. Replace the file mmgr_dal_USBManager.dll in Micro-Manager 1.4 with the version from http://valelab.ucsf.edu/~MM/mmgr_dal_USBManager.dll
3. Download the new K8061 driver from http://valelab.ucsf.edu/~MM/K8061Driver.zip.  Replace your current driver with this one.

Thanks very much for the instructions! I tried installing MM1.4 and replacing the USBManager DLL, as well as removing the current driver for the K8061 and replacing with the new one you linked to. Using the same config file as before, I got an error 112 again. I then tried to use the config wizard to create a new config and add K8061. When I press the "detect ports" button, I repeatedly get error 105. A couple times, the Velleman K8061-0 port *did* show up in the config wizard following this error, but on the subsequent page, I get an error 101. This behavior repeated itself when I tried a clean install of MM1.4 and the K8061 on a separate 32-bit Win7 machine in the lab that is not used with our microscopes, and never had the K8061 connected. However, when I tried with my 32-bit WinXP computer at home using the same procedure, all worked perfectly...so it seems there is still a compatibility issue with Win7. The corelog from the Win7 machine on our microscope is below, followed by the corelog from the other Win7 machine (this corelog shows an instance of MM1.4 finding the port following error 105, and then giving an error 101 on the following page).

Thanks again for the help,
Matt

Re: Velleman K8061 Errors 22, 101, 112

Hi Matthew,

On Mar 12, 2011, at 4:24 PM, Matthew Nicholas wrote:

In that case, try unplugging the USB cable, and re-inserting it.

I then tried to use the config wizard to create a new config and add K8061. When I press the "detect ports" button, I repeatedly get error 105.

The "detect ports" button's name is misleading.  It is actually detecting to which port the device you work with is attached (i.e., it is not detecting ports).   The K8061 itself does not have device detection code,  and the error that you see is an interesting side effect caused by the K8061 detecting that the name of the serial port that the device detection code gives to the device is not to its liking.

I did not manage to go through the device wizard either, but I did manage to get the board to work by loading a simple config file that only contained the board (you can make it by quitting the device wizard before going to the step where it configures everything - and do not press the "detect ports" button).  You may need to unplug the cable and replug it in between.

A couple times, the Velleman K8061-0 port *did* show up in the config wizard following this error, but on the subsequent page, I get an error 101.

The error 101 is indicative of still using the old driver.  Are you absolutely sure that you removed the driver and installed the new one?

This behavior repeated itself when I tried a clean install of MM1.4 and the K8061 on a separate 32-bit Win7 machine in the lab that is not used with our microscopes, and never had the K8061 connected. However, when I tried with my 32-bit WinXP computer at home using the same procedure, all worked perfectly...so it seems there is still a compatibility issue with Win7.

As I wrote before, I spend a couple of hours on Friday and this is all not working correctly, but I am trying to speed this up since you appear to need it.  However, this will takes us a couple more days next week to sort out, and there may be issues that we we can not deal with, so if you want to be sure that you can get to work quickly, you should install XP on the computer running the microscope.

Best,

Nico

Hi Nico,
Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it. I'll try to get a copy of WinXP on our 32-bit partition on Monday. In the meantime, in case it is useful:

In that case, try unplugging the USB cable, and re-inserting it.

I tried several times, but it didn't seem to help.

I did not manage to go through the device wizard either, but I did manage to get the board to work by loading a simple config file that only contained the board (you can make it by quitting the device wizard before going to the step where it configures everything - and do not press the "detect ports" button).  You may need to unplug the cable and replug it in between.

I tried creating this file by quitting out of the wizard, once with pressing the Detect Ports button and once without. The difference is that when I press the detect ports button, I get this in the config file
   Device,Velleman K8061-0,USBManager,Velleman K8061-0
   Device,K8061-Hub,K8061,K8061-Hub
   Device,K8061-DAC,K8061,K8061-DAC
whereas when I do not press it, I get only the last two lines. When the first line is there, I get error 101. When it is not there, I don't get any errors, and the device seems to load correctly. However, when I add a group to control DAC-1 and move the slider, I get an error 17, and this shows up in the corelog:

LOG(2011-03-13T18:57:47.814505, 2612, 0012DB20:): Device K8061-DAC message: Error reported by libk8055 function WriteAllDigital

The error 101 is indicative of still using the old driver.  Are you absolutely sure that you removed the driver and installed the new one?

Yes, I uninstalled in the device manager, checked the option to uninstall the driver software, and for good measure deleted C:\Windows\system32\libusb0.dll and restarted. I was worried about this also, which is why I tried installing on a second Win7 PC that had never seen the K8061 before, and all the behavior was the same. I also get the same error 17 and corelog output as mentioned above on this second Win7 system.

Understood. I'll see if I can get a copy of XP. Thanks for all your help!!

Re: Velleman K8061 Errors 22, 101, 112

Hoover, Karl
Hi Matthew (and others trying to configure LibUSB devices on Windows 7)

There is some trouble with the support of USB devices on Windows 7. The problem is in the installation of the LibUSB-win32 driver underlying the micro-manager device adapters. I've contacted the libUSB programmers trying to a find a simpler solution, but in the mean time, I've found that the following does work:

1. Download the libUSB-win32 archive, 1.2.3.0 is currently the latest.
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/libusb-win32/

2. Extract the archive into a directory such as \Program Files (x86)\libusb

3. Attach your USB device to the computer, currently we know about Velleman K8055 & K8061 and the Nikon AZ100

4. In that directory find and run the program bin\inf-wizard.exe and  select an output directory for the 'installation package'

5. In the subsequent screen select "Install Now..."

6. Configure your device in Micro-manager hardware configuration, both 1.3 and 1.4, while differing, are both pretty much self-explanatory (I hope)

Best regards,
Karl Hoover

Re: Velleman K8061 Errors 22, 101, 112

Hi Karl, I am trying to do the same as Matthew a few months ago: installing MM 1.4 on a 32 bit windows 7 enterprise machine. Even after trying all the steps that you recommended in this thread, I have been unable to get rid of the error messages. However, MM crashes once every three instances (on an average) particularly when I try to load the config file and/ or start a multidimensional acquisition. Is there a more recent fix to the problem for windows 7-32 bit machines?
